The North Korean invitation puts Moon in a hard position as he seeks a rapprochement with the north on the one hand and a desire not to upset the USA on the other.

The lunch comes a day after the North's delegation, including the leader's sister, Kim Yo-jong, and the nominal head of state, Kim Yong-nam, paid a visit to President Moon Jae-in and delivered the North Korean leader's invitation for Moon to visit the North.

"Its delegation and athletes are getting all the spotlight, and Kim Jong Un's sister is showing elegant smiles before the South Korean public and the world".

South and North Korea last marched together at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin.

During Friday night's Opening Ceremony, PyeongChang Stadium erupted with applause when the delegations from North and South Korea marched in unison under one flag.

In an extraordinary show of unexpected unity, North and South Korea sat side by side Friday night under exploding fireworks that represented peace, not destruction, as the 2018 Winter Olympics opened on a Korean Peninsula driven by generations of anger, suspicion and bloodshed.

The first immediate member of North Korea's ruling family to visit South Korea since the Korean War in 1953, Kim Yo-jong shook hands with South Korea President Moon Jae-in, watched the ceremonies from a box that also included United States VP Mike Pence, and was granted the honor of officially announcing the start of the 2018 Olympic Games. "They have people hungry in North Korea".

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who looked uncomfortable at times during the opening ceremony, irritated his hosts by telling the South Korean leader that joint South Korea-U.S. military drills should be promptly resumed after the Games.

But in an interview in the Washington Post on Sunday, Pence said he and Moon had agreed on terms for more diplomatic engagement with North Korea, first with Seoul and then possibly leading to direct talks with Washington without pre-conditions. It warned against agreeing to talks before North Korea scrapped its nuclear program, saying it would only "benefit the enemy".

It would be the first summit in more than 10 years between the Korean leaders.

"Now is not the time to postpone US-South Korea military exercises". Two athletes from the joint Koreas women's hockey team climbed stairs to the cauldron with the Olympic torch.

Vice President Mike Pence is in Seoul, where he was reported to have described Kim's regime as "the most tyrannical" on earth.

On Saturday morning, the North's official news agency, KCNA, issued a report about the Olympics opening that was notable in its lack of the loaded language it usually uses when writing about the South and the United States, which it characterizes as Seoul's overlord.
