During the search for the girls, Huntley was filmed on television saying he was likely to be the last person to have seen them on the day they disappeared, and expressed sympathy to the families.

The 44-year-old, who killed friends Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman in Soham, Cambridgeshire, in August 2002, is serving a life sentence after being found guilty of killing the girls following a trial.

Ian Huntley has said he is "sorry" for murdering Jessica Chapman and Holly Wells.

The girls left a family barbecue to buy candies in August 2002, but were never seen alive again.

Huntley admitted to deliberately killing Jessica to stop her from speaking after Holly died in the bath in what he says was an accident.

His then-girlfriend Maxine Carr was sentenced to three years in prison for giving Huntley a false alibi.

He reportedly said: "I am genuinely, genuinely sorry and it breaks my heart when it is reported I have no remorse, that I relish something".

According to The Sun, he says on the tape: "I can't change anything".

"I know those girls would be 26 this year with families of their own, jobs and lives".

"I know that, I don't expect it to but I would much rather people have the truth about how I feel".
