Second-seeded Lucas Pouille defeated fellow Frenchman Richard Gasquet 7-6 (2), 6-4 on Sunday to win the Open Sud de France in Montpellier for his fifth career ATP title.

Tsonga was 6-1, 5-5 up when he sustained a thigh injury after having had two match points.

He saved the first two break points with volley winners but the third proved to be fatal, missing an easy backhand to give his opponent a commanding lead.

Pouille, the tournament's second seed, did not face a single break point during the one hour and 26-minute encounter as the world No 17 - who is projected to move up one spot in the rankings - picked up his first title of the season.

This was their fifth meeting, as it all started here in Montpellier three years ago, and Lucas claimed the fourth win in a row over the more experienced rival who played in his sixth consecutive Montpellier final, missing the opportunity to win the fourth title.
