Police in Manchester have launched a major manhunt after a man allegedly tried to rape a 10 year old girl.

Mr Riley said police had not received any other reports "of this nature" in the area over the weekend.

Greater Manchester Police say the girl was approached today at about 2pm on Kincraig Close, Openshaw, around 2 miles east of the city centre. Police said he tried to attack her on open land nearby.

She managed to escape during the attempted assault and stopped a dog walker for help.

Patrols have been stepped up in the area as officers search for the attacker.

He is described as a man in his 20s, of Asian appearance, with a slim build and wearing a dark coat.

Detective Chief Inspector James Riley said: 'What happened to this young girl is understandably very upsetting and specially trained officers will continue to support her in any way they can.

'Parents and neighbours will be concerned and we have stepped up our visible police patrols throughout the coming days and nights.

He said the force was doing everything in its power to find the man and a dedicated team of detectives was working round the clock.

Police described her as fearless and said that she and a number of witnesses had provided a good description of the man.
