Kim Yo-jong invited Moon to visit "at the early date possible", a spokesman for South Korea's Presidential Palace said.

Hundreds of South Korean activists gathered in protest of their northern counterparts Sunday, burning the North's flag and ripping up posters of dictator Kim Jong Un's face.

During Pence's visit, Moon assured the vice president he would tell the North Koreans clearly that they would not get economic or diplomatic concessions for just talking, only for taking concrete steps toward denuclearization, the newspaper said.

Athletes from South Korea and the DPRK had marched together for the first time at the opening ceremony of the Sydney Summer Olympics in 2000. "An early resumption of dialogue between the United States and the North is needed also for the development of the South-North Korean relationship", he said, according to his spokesman.

Kim Yo Jong arrived in South Korea on Friday with Kim Yong Nam, the North's nominal head of state, for the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics in the alpine resort town of Pyeongchang. "That is a very odd time, if in fact he is trying to show a warming", Mattis said, referring to Kim Jong Un. The South Koreans want to use the Olympics to ease tensions spurred by North Korea's pursuit of nuclear weapons.

Kim Jong Un's sister Kim Yo Jong greeted Moon Jae In at the Pyeongchang opening ceremony.

The two Koreas are technically still at war after a conflict in the 1950s ended with an armistice, rather than a peace treaty.

Washington seems to be unhappy about the Pyongyang-Seoul engagement.

"Working in unity on the way to unification", Kim Yong-nam wrote.

The delegation will return to Pyongyang later today. United States Vice-President Mike Pence was also present and led the USA delegation.

"Under a strong position for denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula, Korea will faithfully implement the global sanctions on North Korea, while also adhering to the principle of resolution through peaceful means", the statement said.

The North's representative, its highest-level official ever to visit the South, was placed between Olympics chief Thomas Bach and United Nations secretary-general Antonio Guterres.

"On a political level in Seoul, there is no wedge that can be driven between us by North Korea", Mattis said, echoing comments made by U.S. Vice President Mike Pence.
