Israel's Ambassador to the United Nations, Danny Danon, plans to make a bipartisan pitch for recognizing Jerusalem as that nation's capital when he addresses the Republican Jewish Coalition in Las Vegas Saturday. - Reuters picKUALA LUMPUR, Feb 11 ― Malaysia will not be affected by United States president Donald Trump's threat to cut aid to countries that voted against Washington's move to recognise Jerusalem as Israel's capital, the American ambassador to Malaysia said.

"The Palestinian side insists of forming a multilateral approach to overlook the peace process with the Israeli side" in an attempt to disregard the U.S. from its former role in the peace process, he said.

He told WAFA that Abbas' visit to Russian Federation comes amid extremely complicated circumstances where the region is affected by major events and escalating developments as a result to the U.S. decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and transfer the embassy to it.

Judging by the bitter and frustrating experiences over the past half century of Israeli occupation of the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, I don't quite see Israel withdrawing from the occupied Palestinian territories by peace negotiations.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas' aide Majdi Khalidi on Sunday said that Palestinians will ask Russian President Vladimir Putin to step into a multilateral mechanism to overlook the peace process. "The capital, having Jerusalem be your great capital, was a very important thing to a lot of people".

Asked whether Israeli settlements would form part of the peace plan, he said: "We will be talking about settlements".

"That money is on the table and that money is not going to them unless they sit down and negotiate peace", Trump said last month beside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

"The settlements are something that very much complicates and always have complicated making peace, so I think Israel has to be very careful with the settlements", Trump said.

"I have been thanked and in some cases not thanked, to be 100% honest about it".

Trump said he could understand why a number of other presidents who made moving the US Embassy to Jerusalem a campaign pledge, "bailed on their promise", because "I will tell you, the lobbying against it was tremendous".

"I don't know frankly if we are going to even have talks".
