PLO Official Saeb Erekat Calls Pence Speech 'Gift to Extremists'

Jordan's king appealed Sunday to Vice President Mike Pence to "rebuild trust and confidence" in the possibility of a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, following fallout from the Trump administration's decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital.

Israeli-Arab members of the Knesset protesting the USA recognition of Jerusalem as the Israeli capital were escorted out after heckling Pence at the start of his speech.

President Donald Trump announced the plan to relocate the embassy on December 9, which prompted widespread condemnation in the Arab world for derailing any attempt at peace between Israelis and Palestinians.

On Saturday, Odeh announced that his faction would boycott Pence's speech saying that the USA vice president was "dangerous".

Although Palestinian leaders refused to meet the vice-president on this trip, he also said his country remained fully committed to achieving a peace deal to end the Israel-Palestinian conflict.

While Pence said the USA would open an embassy in Jerusalem by the end of 2019, the us now has no facility there big enough to house all the work of its Tel Aviv embassy. I think a lot of what he said has strengthened the bonds and the friendship between Israel and the United States.

The Palestinians have angrily protested against the USA decision to recognise Jerusalem as Israel's capital and say the U.S. can not be trusted as a mediator.

Later on Monday, Abbas said "the Europeans agreed with us about the issue of Jerusalem. they understand it but they have not made a decision about the recognition yet because it needs another meeting".

Arab lawmakers held up signs condemning the move and were confronted by Jewish lawmakers before ushers subdued them in violent scenes. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson once said that it would take three or four years to move the embassy. He says Trump is determined to implement a merit-based system that encourages immigration by those who will "contribute to a growing American economy and thriving communities" and one that does not take into account the immigrants' "race or creed".

For over 20 years, the endeavor to move the USA embassy has been a bipartisan effort, supported by both Democrats and Republicans.

Netanyahu called Pence "a great friend of Israel" and said there was "no alternative for American leadership" in the peace process.

Ayman Odeh, leader of the Joint Arab List, said the group will not provide a "silent backdrop" to a man he called a "dangerous racist". "They don't even want to negotiate a long overdue peace treaty with Israel".

Pence placed his right hand over his heart as an honor guard greeted him with the American national anthem.

"I have a solemn promise to Israel, to all the Middle East and to the world - the United States of America will never allow Iran to acquire a nuclear weapon", Pence said.

Pence also said the U.S. would support a two-state solution, but only if both sides agree.

Mr Abbas made no mention of the speech when he met European Union foreign affairs chief Federica Mogherini in Brussels.

Calling Pence's remarks as "ludicrous", Hanan Ashrawi, a member of PLO Executive Committee, refuted Pence's claim that he visited the region to promote peace and to resume the talks.

In response, the US made a decision to in aid to Palestinians.
