"We remain concerned about the bus driver, who was airlifted to Halifax, and our thoughts are with the driver", says Paul Oldford of the Cape Breton-Victoria Regional School Board.

RCMP said in a news release that the crash, which happened near the crest of Kellys Mountain, occurred at 8:08 a.m.

RCMP said the bus was heading east when it collided with the tractor-trailer, which had been parked on the road overnight.

There were 11 students on the bus at the time.

"The (students') injuries were limited to bumps and bruises ..."

The Jaws of Life had to be used to extricate the driver from the bus.

An EHS LifeFlight helicopter responded to the scene and transported the driver to hospital in Halifax.

Board staff also attended the scene, although they couldn't access the crash site directly as it was cordoned off, MacLeod said.

Highway 105 was closed in both directions between the Seal Island lookoff and the Englishtown ferry for several hours Friday morning.
