TDOT said it now has over 229,000 tons of salt and more than 1.6 million gallons of salt brine ready for use.

"We begin our winter preparations months in advance", said TDOT Commissioner John Schroer. One TDOT worker said he filled his truck up with salt three times - they normally only need one load.

The department says it now has over 229,000 tons of salt and more than 1.6 million gallons of salt brine ready for use.

Salt brine is a salt/water mixture used as a pre-treatment for roads before a winter storm or to melt snow on roadways when temperatures are hovering around the freezing mark.

With the threat of the dreaded wintery mix, crews from the Tennessee Department of Transportation were out early Friday, preparing to treat interstates and state roads to prevent freezing and risky conditions. Salt is applied to roads once snow has started to accumulate.

TDOT has a fleet of more than 800 snow trucks statewide, created to remove snow and ice safely and efficiently from state routes and interstates.

With the new year, TDOT got 108 new trucks to hit the roads statewide to tackle winter weather.
