Moon reportedly thanked Trump for his "influential leadership in making the talks possible" and both leaders expressed support for Trump's "maximum pressure" campaign against North Korea, which has seen heightened military threats and a chain of nuclear threats flying both ways across the Pacific.

Trump's comments come days after representatives from North and South Korea held day-long negotiations in the demilitarized zone, where Pyongyang agreed to send a delegation to next month's Winter Olympics and to hold talks with Seoul to ease military tensions.

The proposal follows the high-level inter-Korean talks which took place on Tuesday and represented the first such meeting since December 2015.

But if Kim does decide to retaliate, it's almost certain the brunt of the attack would fall on South Korean civilians.

The result of Tuesday's talks was a joint statement from the two Koreas, which pledged further dialogue on the DPRK's participation in the upcoming PyeongChang Olympics, as well as on military and diplomatic issues. It's not going to be like toppling (ex-Iraqi President Saddam) Hussein.

"This is a very positive start to the New Year for the global Olympic movement and for long-term peace on the Korean peninsula", said the President of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA), Sheikh Ahmad Al Fahad Al Sabah of this week's talks.

During a regular press briefing Thursday, foreign ministry spokesman Noh Kyu-duk told reporters that the government's basic stance is that it will do its utmost to avoid controversy over North Korea's participation in the games possibly violating sanctions.

The prospect of military confrontation has been magnified in the past year as Trump and Kim have traded bellicose rhetoric and crude insults, as the North has conducted its sixth and most powerful nuclear detonation and three tests of intercontinental ballistic missiles that now put the U.S. mainland in North Korea's range.

The White House reported a pretty standard conversation, while South Korea reported that Trump firmly denied reports that he's considering a "bloody nose" strike on North Korea.

The South's president added that improving inter-Korean ties is dependent on the North being willing to abandon its controversial nuclear weapons program.

North Korea also restored a military hotline on the western coast of the peninsula immediately following the talks.

It would also be a violation to bring in athletes and officials by air given that the North's Air Koryo airline is on the blacklist of U.S. -imposed sanctions.

With their tight choreography - sometimes using props such as fans - the cheerleaders were lavished with attention as they sang and danced in the stands. "You have to knock on the door to see if it will open".

A government official told Yonhap News Agency that Seoul remains firm that it will not seek anything related to the North's participation in the Olympics that could undermine the "basic spirit" of the existing sanctions but admitted that it could be a challenge if the North proposes something that goes against them. Throughout their history, North Korea has consistently boasted of their "independence" in the face of South Korea's 'dependence' on the United States.
