Philadelphia Eagles advance to NFC Championship, despite being underdogs

It came down to the Eagles "D" stopping the Falcons on fourth and goal from the two-yard line to preserve the win and advance to the NFC championship game next Sunday at 4:20 Lincoln Financial Field.

Thanks to Foles doing just enough to get by on offense after completing 23 of 30 passes for 246 yards with no turnovers, Philadelphia was able to prove all of the doubters wrong by hanging on for the tough win against Atlanta to advance to the NFC Championship to face the victor of Sunday's game between the New Orleans Saints and Minnesota Vikings. They mixed it up with backs in the passing game, and with a wide receiver, Nelson Agholor, in the running game. Two plays later, Ryan's final throw sailed through Jones' hands, and the Eagles were headed to next weekend's NFC championship game at home in Philadelphia.

Eagles tight end Zach Ertz tipped his hat to the remaining NFC opponents, but says he and his teammates will be ready for whoever survives Sunday's divisional game.

"That's a play we practice all the time, and certainly in those situations you go to your best player", Ryan said.

It went wrong, though, just like moment after moment went against the Falcons.

The running back was perhaps his harshest critic after the win, stating his mistakes, the early fumble and a dropped pass in the second half, that could have proved costly if not for the play of his teammates. Nothing about it made sense at the time or afterward.

Falcons head coach Dan Quinn said that he wouldn't want anyone else but Ryan to lead his team.

Foles made the little plays that were in front of him, designed well to spread the ball around to nine skill players.

Including that last one. Sarkisian has come under heavy criticism for the Falcons struggles in 2017, but Schwartz held his counterpart to just 10 points and only allowed him to cross the Eagles 40-yard-line three times. I think it was a right call.

The Eagles kicked a field goal during the final second of the half after an improbable sequence.

Ryan's favorite receiver slipped, recovered, then had the game-winning pass go right through his hands. It was nearly as if someone handed the play-calling head coach a copy of his own team's roster and he flipped to the page that listed his running backs - Jay Ajayi, LeGarrette Blount and Corey Clement - and had an epiphany.

Lane Johnson walked off the field wearing a dog mask while teammates barked after the Philadelphia Eagles squeaked out an upset to move within one victory of the Super Bowl.

Despite scoring a touchdown, the Eagles still trailed the Falcons, 10-6, in the closing seconds of the first half. They took advantage of every miscue and gave Foles chances over and over, to either score or control the clock. So perhaps there is a bit of destiny on the line if the Vikings can pull out a victory this afternoon.

Atlanta capitalized on the turnover with a 33-yard field goal from Matt Bryant, giving the Falcons an early 3-0 lead. On a third down at the six-yard line, Fletcher Cox was about to sack Ryan before Ryan flicked the ball to Devonta Freeman at the last second.

It led to a three-and-out. "Nobody has given us a chance", said Pederson.

They couldn't finish - something too familiar to them over the past year.
