This year at CES has seen Google move into the smart home market in a big way with its "Hey, Google" voice assistant service taking on the dominance of Alexa by Amazon.

In the following few months, expect Alexa to feature on smart displays including Sony, LG, Lenovo, and JBL, the Google VP of engineering for Alexa Scott Huffman said in a blog post.

On the show floor, it smoothly scrolled through demo applications popping up info in ways we're used to seeing on our phones or through Android Auto.

In the wake of being outpaced by its rival, Amazon's Alexa, Google is looking at a renewed consumer push for its Assistant.

It's nice to see that these features are spreading out across vehicles and becoming less manufacturer-specific - but it'll also make it more hard to figure out who's on the phone, who's talking to Alexa or Google, and who's just muttering to themselves.

The problem with Google's new assistant is privacy. "[The firm] has proven that there is a logical use case for a hands-free assistant in the smart home".

One can palpably feel it in the air that Google really really wants the Assistant to take off and become more mainstream.

In November, Google launched out an upgrade that will permit you to employ Home devices in your house as intercom systems. 64% of those who responded in the survey are using the device for smart home functionality and 66% said they wanted to entertain using the speakers with music and other content.

Industry watchers are struggling to keep up with all the different devices that Amazon has partnered with on Alexa, but it's clear the company has been busy making friends with manufacturers over the past year.

According to sources close to the matter, Google is toying with the idea of launching a revamped online store in February.

On the basic technology level, Alexa has, for competition, Apple's Siri, Google Assistant, Microsoft Cortana and Samsung's Bixby.
