The bus was on its way to Dharmastala from Bengaluru when the incident took place. About 38 people also suffered injuries in the incident.

The deceased included T.D. Diana, 22, a native of Dharmasthala, who was working as a physiotherapist in a private hospital in Bengaluru.

Police said eight passengers were killed, including seven on thespot, and more than 10 others injured when a Karnataka State RoadTransport Corporation (KSRTC) bus overturned and fell into the roadside ditch near Shantigrama in Hassan District in the early hours oftoday.

Of the 44 passengers, the 38 injured passengers were rushed to a state-run hospital at Hassan for treatment after they were extricated from the mangled bus.

According to the preliminary information, the driver lost the control of the bus.

The KSRTC will step up safety measures to bring down the death rate in accidents by introducing bus ambulances equipped with emergency medical facilities in its 16 divisions.

The transport minister H M Revanna has announced a compensation of three lakh rupees to the next of kin of the diseased.
