An emergency bushfire warning has been downgraded in the Port Stephens region as authorities work to control a blaze that has forced the closure of Newcastle Airport.

The fire is moving east towards Newcastle Airport, with residents in Barry Close, Cabbage Tree Road, and Masonite Rd advised to shelter in place as it is too late to leave.

The fire is being fanned by strong north-westerly winds.

Water bombing aircraft and more than 60 Rural Fire Service personnel are working to contain the fire that is threatening homes in the area.

"Check and follow your bushfire survival plan and prepare for a bushfire in your area", RFS advice said.

The video appears to show the fire just several hundred metres away.

A RFS spokesperson told Daily Mail Australia that a local southerly wind change has pushed the fire in a northerly direction, and split it into two separate blazes.
