Members of the public found the man, believed to be in his 50s or 60s, with two fatal stab wounds to the chest just after 6am on Saturday morning near the Forrest Road entrance to Hurstville Railway Station, police said.

They phoned emergency services and a crime scene was set up.

"Whilst police were at the scene, further information was received that another male - another male possibly involved - was at a home close by at Hurstville", he said.

He suffered severe lacerations to his body and is understood to be 60 years old, although he has not yet been identified.

The man has been taken to Kogarah Police Station and is assisting police with enquiries.

An "edged weapon" was seized during the arrest, and the man now in custody is at Kogarah Police Station is said to be assisting with police inquiries.

A large crime scene remains in place near the station.
