What could be an even more surprising revelation would be if Rey identified the connection she shared with Kylo Ren (Adam Driver), something that was hinted at in The Last Jedi, as a romantic one.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi might have received overwhelmingly positive reviews when it premiered in December a year ago, however, Lucasfilm's newest sequel trilogy installment received a punch from the Star Wars fanbase with an alarming 57 percent audience score from 83,000 audience reviewers on Rotten Tomatoes. Fans were quite divisive onThe Last Jedi, resulting in disappointments regarding the mysteries set up in The Force Awakens.

Ridley wanted to know from Trevorrow what happens to Rey in the final movie of the trilogy.

Daisy Ridley cried when she was told the original plan for her character in "Star Wars: Episode IX".

Arguably the biggest takeaway from Ridley's quote is that neither Rey nor Poe are yearning for a romantic subplot to make them whole - Lucasfilm's current crop of characters is already pretty nuanced and complex without the need to employ impassioned love stories. So, I hope when Rey and Poe get to have some scenes together, there can be that intimacy [without the need for] romantic love.

According to "The Last Jedi" director and writer Rian Johnson, things could still change for Rey. Here, the actress outlined why she believes Rey's relationship with Poe should remain platonic.

Given that Rey only officially met Poe (Oscar Isaac) at the end of this most recent film, it would seem like an odd choice for the two characters to develop a romantic relationship, but the upcoming Episode IX could be set much further in the future, potentially after the two had countless experiences together that created a romantic bond.

The "Jurassic World" director was supposed to be the director of the next movie in the saga, "Episode IX", which would close out the current trilogy.
