Arsenal's Mesut Ozil is reportedly keen to sign for Manchester United

Diario Gol claim Liverpool have a verbal agreement in place with Real Madrid and that the Premier League side will go through with it and sign Kovacic from Madrid if Barcelona manage to pry Philippe Coutinho away from them either in January or next summer.

Kovacic's ability to run with the ball - only Lionel Messi had more successful dribbles last season La Liga - would add an extra dimension to the Liverpool midfield while giving it more balance - considering the Croat's excellent positioning sense and his defensive diligence.

The Spanish club are growing increasingly "optimistic" that they will get their man in January.

According to Mundo Deportivo, the La Liga side feels that if they can not agree on a deal for Coutinho by the end of December, then they will need to target the likes of Arsenal's Mesut Ozil or and Gremio midfielder Arthur.

The Catalan giants tried to pull out all the stops to land Coutinho in August, only for Liverpool to refuse to do business - despite a transfer request from the player himself.

Barcelona midfielder Andres Iniesta believes that signing Philippe Coutinho from Liverpool would be an "important reinforcement" for his side.

MD further highlights the pre-arranged summer arrival of Naby Keita at Anfield, as well as renewed interest from the Reds in Monaco star Thomas Lemar as additional factors that could assist Barça in landing Coutinho.

The player Jurgen Klopp was keen on landing was versatile defender Sergi Roberto as part of the deal but Barcelona were not willing to part ways with the Spaniard who was targeted by Manchester United and Chelsea in the summer.
