For the cash-strapped and hungry, McDonald's Dollar Menu was the go-to choice once upon a time.

Taco Bell's announcement came the same day as McDonald's announced they will revive their value menu with items costing $1, $2 or $3. And as more people visited its restaurants for deals, McDonald's said some also bought pricier burgers stuffed with crispy onions or guacamole, which helped sales.

While Taco Bell's "Dolllar Cravings" menu has been around for three years, the chain plans to add 20 new items to the 11 now on it throughout 2018.

"The "$1 $2 $3 Dollar Menu" will become a permanent part of the McDonald's nationwide menu starting January 4, the Oak Brook, Illinois-based company said. If you have $3, splurge on either a Sausage McMuffin with Egg, Classic Chicken Sandwich, Triple Cheeseburger or a Happy Meal.

McDonald's is in a price war with rivals as they battle to win U.S. customers who've come to expect deals on fast food. "We are (and always have been) completely committed to coming up with the most craveable, creative menu items that set the bar for what great food at a great value should be".
