UN Undersecretary-General for Political Affairs Jeffrey Feltman, left, talks with North Korean Vice Foreign Minister Pak Myong Guk at the People's Palace of Culture in Pyongyang, North Korea Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2017. He arrived in Pyongyang on Tuesday for a four or five-day stay.

While the details of the talk were not confirmed, Feltman on Wednesday had discussed matters "related to common areas of interest concerning North Korea and United Nations agencies", with vice foreign minister Pak Myong-guk, according to the Korean Central News Agency.

Feltman is the first person in his position to visit Pyongyang since 2010.

Before the meeting took place, the North Korean official expressed his hope that the discussion would be "full of sincerity", Kyodo News reported.

The visit by Feltman, an American citizen and former State Department official, comes just after Pyongyang's launch of its most advanced missile to date.

U.N. Secretary General Antonio Guterres had, on several occasions, expressed his willingness to broker talks between North Korea and the worldwide community.
