After being both Green Lantern and Deadpool, this makes sense. The Van Wilder star will join Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom's Justice Smith and Big Little Lies' Kathryn Newton in front of the camera.

For any other leading man, that synopsis would be a head-scratcher, but Reynolds is turning roles that wouldn't work for many of his peers into gold. Ryan Reynolds will star as Detective Pikachu in the movie of the same name. Reynolds, however, can likely deliver a similar performance that is just as incongruous with the traditional image of Pikachu - just look at his work in Deadpool.

Director Rob Letterman is helming the project, while the script has been penned by Nicole Perlman and Alex Hirsch.

Pikachu is a species of Pokemon, while Detective Pikachu the character is a peculiar sort from the Pikachu set, a self-styled investigator who is good at finding things. Newton plays a sassy journalist who helps them on their adventure.

Remember how weird it seemed previous year that a live-action Hollywood movie based on Detective Pikachu was getting made? There's a lot of money riding on its success, given the Pokemon animated series, video games and trading cards, which are available in 74 countries. The film is being distributed by Universal, but a North American release date has not yet been announced. Let us know in the comments!
