And that won't change the rest of the season.

Petty is right. McCown admitted Wednesday that it would mean a lot for the 38-year-old to start all 16 games for the first time in his remarkable career. Bryce Petty and Christian Hackenberg will remain on the bench.

"I've been saying that", the third-year coach said.

"That's what I've been saying", he repeated.

The two touchdown runs put McCown in an elite club: He joined Jim Thorpe and Doug Flutie as the only players in National Football League history to rush for two scores at 38 or older. He was named the AFC's Offensive Player of the Week. General manager Mike Maccagnan cut a slew of veteran players in the offseason, setting up a prime tanking scenario.

Things just haven't played out that way. McCown is a big reason why.

"As a competitor, you obviously want to play". So that was my mindset going into each week. For me, my mindset, and every guy in this locker room, when your number's called, you play until you're not in. "I had every expectation of doing that anyway, so glad to hear it and I'm excited about it".

McCown will look to replicate last week's performance when the Jets travel to Denver to take on the Broncos. While that would be a band-aid fix, the Jets still don't know if they have a long-term solution.

"My role right now is the backup quarterback", Petty said. "I don't see why [Bowles] would go for a change", he said. He hasn't thrown a pass since being drafted in the second round in 2016. He's only been active twice - Week 17 of 2016, Week 1 of 2017.

"Everyone has their own path", Hackenberg said. "It's not good for anyone". "I always tell young guys, 'Hopefully you're going to get an opportunity to play at some point.' So it's not necessarily if, but when. I got faith that I just keep my head to the grindstone and keep working hard, things will work out".

Hackenberg did see increased action this offseason.

McCown also rushed for a one-yard touchdown as the Jets knocked off the Kansas City Chiefs in a wild 38-31 game.

"You take the practice reps, preseason, OTAs into account", Hackenberg said. "And then...develop a plan for the offseason and really attack that". That's something I did past year that I felt was very good. You just continue to keep grinding. Everyone's process is different.

"For me, personally, I think making sure I stay focused on that, and continuing to grow from that, finding ways to get better, and waiting for that opportunity. I know that for a fact", Petty said.

Since that year with the Cardinals, McCown had started more than nine games just once: when he was under center for 11 games with Tampa Bay three years ago. At the minimum, Hackenberg hasn't shown enough to make a final determination.

Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins could be a free agent this year. The draft should be littered with talent - Sam Darnold (USC), Josh Rosen (UCLA), Josh Allen (Wyoming), Lamar Jackson (Louisville).

With McCown the guy the rest of the season. the Jets will have to determine if it's worth adding one of the above. without ever seeing the guy in-house play a regular season game.
