Riley said that Mayfield will not be listed as a captain or start in Saturday's game against West Virginia.

"This decision was hard", said Riley, who became emotional during his weekly press conference, unable to speak for several seconds.

"Mayfield, widely considered the heavy favorite in the Heisman Trophy race, yelled "(expletive) you" toward the KU sideline and twice made the obscene gesture.

Mayfield's actions during Oklahoma's 41-3 victory over Kansas drew the ire of many people, including Riley, who said his behavior was "unacceptable". "It's disrespectful, it's not the example I want to set, it's not the legacy I want to leave at OU, so I truly do apologize", Mayfield said. Thinking about the kids that are watching this now, it's not something I want to do to the parents out there.

Beaty said Monday that he had spoken with Oklahoma coach Lincoln Riley, apologizing on behalf of himself and his team. "This darn sure shouldn't taint all the great things he's accomplished here on and off the field".

During the game, Kansas' Hasan Defense was called for a late hit on Mayfield after he had thrown a pass.
