The U.S.is set to play its first match after last month's surprising loss to Trinidad & Tobago eliminated the Americans from contention for Russian Federation 2018, with Sarachan leading an experimental squad against Portugal on Tuesday in Leiria.

Interim boss Dave Sarachan, who took over for Bruce Arena after he stepped down following the qualification failure, picked a young side for the friendly, including several uncapped players. I think we hit a little bit of a bump, no question, but we still think the foundation of our pool of players is strong, and we will be better for this in big picture.

Despite still only being 24, last night was Yedlin's 49th cap, making him the most experienced on the team against Portugal (Caps including last night: DeAndre Yedlin (49), John Brooks (33), Juan Agudelo (27), Danny Williams (23), Kellyn Acosta (17), Eric Lichaj (14), Matt Miazga (4), CJ Sapong (3), Ethan Horvath (2), Tyler Adams (1), Weston McKennie (1)). "I would have liked to have projected that if we did qualify and began in 2018 that there would be some newer, younger faces in our team".

However, in only his second worldwide, 10 minutes later Ethan Horvath conceded an absolute sitter from Portugal, a cross/shot from Antunes on the left somehow squirming through the goalkeeper's arms/legs/body (watch both goals below).
