Russian TV personality Ksenia Sobchak has announced she plans to run in next year's presidential election, offering liberal voters unhappy with President Vladimir Putin's rule someone to back, though she has little prospect of winning.

Ksenia Sobchak's Instagram account, often featuring photographs of her dressed in designer outfits and appearing at glitzy society events, has 5.2 million followers.

"I am a candidate "against everyone".

"When I was 18 and was studying in university, Vladimir Putin became president of Russian Federation".

Ms Sobchak has declared she will be a "candidate against all", hoping to benefit from dismay at Russia's tightly-controlled political system.

In a video posted on her campaign website, Sobchak said she was "against everyone" in Russia's present leadership and said the country was in dire need of a change.

Ms Sobchak says she will consider withdrawing her candidacy if he is allowed to enter the race.

She added: "I am against revolution".

Navalny wants a peaceful handover of power and "that is right, but they won't believe him", Sobchak wrote.

Sobchak, 35, comes from a political dynasty as her father Anatoly Sobchak was a popular mayor of Saint Petersburg, whose aide was a little-known former KGB agent called Vladimir Putin.

Seen as a party girl, she also had her own reality show called Blonde In Chocolate, which she once presented from a bubble bath.

Russian socialite and TV presenter Ksenia Sobchak has announced her decision to run for Russian president in 2018.

She became active in opposition politics around the time that Mr Putin, in 2012, was re-elected to the presidency after stepping down for four years to comply with constitutional term limits.

Her interest in politics is serious and she's unlikely to be "playing someone else's game", Dmitry Gudkov, another opposition politician, said by phone.

She has since married actor Maxim Vitorgan and they have a son.

While interviewing Mr Putin recently for a documentary about her father, Ms Sobchak says she told him about her political plans.

"I am ready to declare them and stand up for them at any level, even the highest".
