The union representing faculty at Ontario's 24 public colleges has set a strike deadline of 12:01 a.m. on October 16.

The Ontario Public Service Employees Union said in a news release late Tuesday that the date was set after the College Employer Council walked away from the bargaining table.

Earlier this week, OPSEU set a Monday, Oct. 16 deadline for strike action, saying the objective was to get negotiations moving before it's too late.

OPSEU represents more than 12,000 professors, instructors, counsellors, and librarians.

J.P. Hornick, the chair of the OPSEU bargaining team, says the employer again refused to consider key issues in the ongoing dispute.

Communications manager Michael Wales said the college has also been in direct communication with students, staff and other stakeholders.

If a faculty strike arrives Monday, Conestoga College plans to suspend all classes.

"During a strike, we're encouraging all students to get caught up on their assignments and projects", Robb said "All campuses will remain open during the strike and supports will be available for students who need help".

As more information is received about the status of negotiations, Niagara College will be updating its Strike Information page.
