VR gaming is over a year old now, and while the technology hit with a lot of hype and excitement, the harshness of reality has set in for a lot of gamers. Yes Sony's headset really turns one today, and the company is ready to celebrate.

Writing on the PlayStation Blog, President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment America, Shawn Layden, also noted that 60 new PSVR games would be coming to the platform over the next few months, leading into early 2018.

"PlayStation VR was created to open a doorway into thrilling and captivating new worlds that electrify our senses", said Layden We are confident that virtual reality is that next step in in the evolution of the videogame medium. The other big challenge, for all headsets, has been getting games that work well with the medium.

But we've been learning a lot about this medium along the way. Unlike with traditional video game development, there isn't a huge pool of virtual reality successes and failures to learn from and iterate on.

"Building the future of VR is a lot like creating a new language. Or maybe even an entirely new alphabet!" claimed Layden.

"VR is a little bit different".

There will be more news coming on PSVR over the coming months with the PlayStation experience in December expected to unveil new projects and experiences. "Making VR a mainstream sensation will require the full efforts of our very best and brightest". "I can tell you the best is yet to come", says Layden.

It's clear to Sony that virtual reality adoption will take some time and for development teams to understand exactly what makes a good VR game, but good news is on the way for PlayStation VR fans.
