Two girls were mowed down by a auto belonging to Shiv Sena's Baramati unit Chief Pappu Mane on Baramati-Morgaon Road on Thursday, claimed TV reports.

CNN-News18 reported that the vehicle belonged to Shiv Sena's Baramati chief Pappu Mane.

Angry locals set the SUV ablaze after, Pappu Mane and his accomplices fled from the spot. Two girls died instantly in the accident that took place near the Baramati-Morgaon road. The deceased girls have been identified as Divya Dnyaneshwar Pawar (12) and Samiksha Manoj Vikar (13).

Police have registered a case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder under section 304 and other relevant sections of Indian Penal Code. "According to preliminary information, three girls were walking towards their school when the auto knocked them down".

After the accident, an angry mob set the vehicle on fire. The police say initial questioning indicates that the politician's friend had borrowed his vehicle.

They managed to nab the driver of the vehicle who was later handed over to police.

According to police officials, the vehicle is in possession of Pappu Mane, but the registration of the vehicle is in the name of Mane's relative.

The law and order situation in the area is under control, the police added.

When asked whether the arrested trio were drunk at the time of the accident, the officer said their medical examination reports are awaited.
