Maria Sharapova through to Tianjin Open quarterfinals

Russian tennis star Maria Sharapova entered the quarterfinals round of the 2017 Tianjin Open tournament in China following her straight sets victory over Poland's Magda Linette in the second round match on Thursday.

Thursday's victory marks the third last-eight showing of the season for the five-time grand-slam victor from Russian Federation, fighting to revive her ranking after serving a 15-month suspension for using an illegal doctor-prescribed medication.

Sharapova has not added to her huge haul of titles since returning from a doping ban, but remains in the hunt for a 36th WTA Tour singles success after claiming the only break of the first set and two in the second to prevail.

"We did a really good job of holding serve in the first set", Sharapova said after the match.

"I feel like I made a few too many errors on my return game which ultimately led to a hard first set but once I broke her early in that second set, I played a really good aggressive game and I felt like I had the momentum in the second", she added.

The five-time grand slam champion, soundly beaten by new world number one Simona Halep in the China Open last week, saw off Linette 7-5 6-3 to move into the last eight. Voegele collected four aces and took advantage of four double faults to dismiss Putintseva in 1 hour, 37 minutes.

Sixth seed Maria Sakkari crashed out, losing 6-0 6-4 to Christina Mchale, while Sara Errani, Aryna Sabalenka and Zhu Lin all advanced.
