The NC Department of Public Safety says that there was an attempted escape from Pasquotank Correctional Institution in Elizabeth City.

According to a tweet from the N.C. DPS, fires were set in the prison sewing plant, apparently for the escape attempt.

The Pasquotank Sheriff's Office said they received a call reporting a possible escape of prisoners. "Several employees injured." It added there would be "more info when available".

According to Peter Sengenberger from Sentara Healthcare, six people were taken to Sentara Albemarle Medical Center.

Lockdowns at Northside Elementary School, Elizabeth City Middle School, and Pasquotank County High School were lifted shortly after 5 p.m.

All afternoon activities at the schools have been cancelled.

Jerry Higgins, communications officer for the North Carolina Department of Public Safety, said he didn't know details about the employees' injuries, but that the situation is contained.

Students who are bus riders who have not arrived home as of yet, will be returned to the school until we hear further from Emergency Management.
