Listing out the names of the persons rescued, Kumar tweeted: "15 Indians rescued, search is on for missing 11 following sinking of a ship off Okinawa".

A cargo ship sank off the coast of south-western Japan, resulting in 11 Indian sailors who were on board going missing.

The Ministry also released a list of 15 Indians rescued by other vessels in the region.

Japan's coast guard earlier received a distress call by Hong Kong-registered vessel Emerald Star.

External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Raveesh Kumar said these missions were regularly monitoring the situation.

The Hong Kong-registered cargo ship was sailing almost 280 kilometres (174 miles) east of the northern tip of the Philippines.

The Japanese coast guard said that it sent two patrol boats and three planes at the site for search and rescue, but a typhoon was making the operation hard.
