Channing Tatum's X-Men spin-off Gambit lands director, release date

After years of shuffling directors and release dates, Fox announced Thursday that Pirates of the Caribbean filmmaker Gore Verbinski is set to direct the X-Men spin-off, which will be released on February 14, 2019.

Gambit always was known for being a romantic, so it's only appropriate that his movie is opening on Valentine's Day.

As of now, Rango and Pirates of the Caribbean director Gore Verbinski is set to direct from Josh Zetumer's script.

In 2015, the Magic Mike star appeared at Fox's Comic-Con International panel to tease the standalone film. That, of course, relates to a chess move - aptly, the gambit - but more importantly it signals the movie is moving ahead at a good pace. It was previously reported he would be joined by Lea Seydoux as the female lead of the film, Bella Donna Boudreaux, the daughter of the leader of the New Orleans Assassins' Guild and Remy LeBeau's first love, though her status is unknown. The character's only big screen appearance to date (outside his name being featured as an Easter egg in X2) was in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, played by Taylor Kitsch. The February area of the calendar has been quite successful for Fox's X-Men properties of late, following Deadpool's record-breaking debut in 2016 and Logan in early March this year.
