"America and our allies will never be intimidated".

"I am calling on Congress to end the defense sequester once and for all", Trump told military personnel at Joint Base Andrews in the US state of Maryland who were celebrating the 70th anniversary of the US Air force.

President Donald Trump honored the resolve of the nation's Air Force on Friday, warning foes and worldwide terrorist groups that the US military would respond to any threats.

Video shows Melania proudly introducing her husband to the stage at a US Air Force event at which point President Trump walks across the stage and instead of giving his wife a kiss, he opts for an awkward formal hand shake.

Speaking of the "confidence" and "rebelliousness" of Airmen, Trump said "I just met a lot of these folks". "They're better looking than Tom Cruise and we know they can fight better and we know they can fly better", he said, referring to Cruise's 1986 film "Top Gun".

Trump said his administration is working to reverse shrinkage in the size of the Air Force that has persisted since the early 1990s, despite the military having been continuously engaged since that time. Paper airplanes, that is.

After the speech, the president and first lady were expected to depart the base for New Jersey, where they will stay at the Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster.
