Ronald Koeman says Michael Keane is playing 'afraid'

United bought Victor Lindelöf over the summer and, although he's yet to properly settle, he could prove to be a better buy than Keane.

'They wanted me, but a few things happened and I thought Everton would be the best place for me to come.

Keane joined United as a 16-year-old and spent six years at the club before being sold to Burnley in January 2015 following a successful loan deal at Turf Moor during the first half of the 2014/15 season. I thought I would get a lot of game time here, more than I possibly would at Man United, and that was a massive factor in my decision.

My family is all Man United fans so it was not an easy decision.

Should Liverpool have moved for Michael Keane before the defender switched from Burnley to Everton in the summer transfer window?

In an in-depth interview with the Times, Keane admitted choosing Everton over the club he grew up supporting was an incredibly tough choice to make, but it was a decision based on what he thought would be best for his career.

Following Everton's embarrassing loss to Atalanta in the Europa League on Thursday, manager Ronald Koeman said his young defender was suffering from low confidence and looked "afraid". Michael Keane is normally our best centre back in our ball possession. If you have doubts instead of going on the front [foot] in defending you make a step back.

"That's all about confidence". However, the defender has revealed that United was an option for him and that he chose Everton for professional reasons, feeling he would have more opportunities to play at Goodison Park.

What has gone wrong for Keane and Everton?

"That all together makes the team weak at this time".

Everton have also made three defensive errors so far this season - the joint-third highest in the league - with one of the errors leading to a goal as Mason Holgate's poor header fell to Raheem Sterling, who scored City's equaliser in the 1-1 draw at the Etihad.
