Stunner. Utah football announces sophomore Tyler Huntley has been named the starting quarterback, beating out senior captain Troy Williams. Huntley of Dania, Florida, played in four games past year, passing for 60 yards and running for 15 with a touchdown.

If the decision comes as a surprise, it is because Utah went 9-4 with Williams as the starter. He arrived past year from Santa Monica College.

Williams put together a serviceable season in 2016, throwing for 2,757 yards and 15 touchdowns with eight interceptions. Taylor, who played quarterback at Cal (1986-89) and briefly with the New York Jets, spent last season as the coordinator at FCS Eastern Washington and was a record-breaking high school coach in Northern California before that when he coached Washington's Jake Browning. Huntley also beat out Alabama transfer Cooper Bateman.
