Iraq: two US soldiers killed, five wounded in internal incident

Two US soldiers were killed and five wounded in northern Iraq on Sunday during "combat operations", a statement from the American military said.

Five other soldiers were wounded, it said in a statement, without providing further details.

OIR revealed that "initial reports indicate the incident was not due to enemy contact" but clarified that all of the service members were "conducting combat operations in northern Iraq" at the time of the incident.

"There are no words to describe the respect I have for you and sorrow I have for your loss", said coalition commander Lt. Gen. Stephen Townsend extending his condolences to the families and fellow soldiers of those killed.

As of June, there were now around 6,100 USA military personnel on the ground in Iraq as part of the multinational campaign to eliminate ISIS, according to the Department of Defense.

The incident came nearly one month after the Iraqi government declared victory over ISIS in the terror network's stronghold of Mosul.

On August 2 another United States military service member was killed in a non-combat incident in Kuwait.
