Per a report by National Football League insider Ian Rapoport, Murphy tore his ACL in Thursday's preseason game against the Baltimore Ravens.

This was the final year of Murphy's rookie contract, meaning he will become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season.

Murphy's injury occurred during a Baltimore Ravens run play midway through the first quarter.

Washington was already going to be without pass-rusher Trent Murphy for the first four games of the 2017 season, but now its outside linebacker will be on the sideline for the entire year.

"It's too bad", coach Jay Gruden said of Murphy before practice Saturday.

Murphy is coming off his best season as a professional, collecting nine sacks in 2016.

Washington also waived tackle Kevin Bowen who was designated as injured.

Murphy was slated to miss the first four games of the season for violating the NFL's policy on performance-enhancing drugs.

Staples, 22, split his college career between UAB and Louisville.
