Third time lucky for ‘How I Met Your Mother’ spinoff

How I Met Your Mother is one of those shows we all fell in love with, and all felt heartbroken over when it came to an end.

20th Century Fox has Alison Bennett (FX's You're The Worst) set to write the spin-off series for HIMYM.

According to Deadline, Bennett will pen How I Met Your Father as part of her overall deal with the 20th Century FOX TV, written on spec and with no studio now attached.

"We're always on the lookout for fresh, new voices, and Alison's work on You're the Worst has been incredible", said 20th TV President of Creative Affairs Jonathan Davis when Bennett's deal was announced. In 2016, Elizabeth Berger and Isaac Aptaker were hired to write a new script, but the plan was put on hold after they were made showrunners of This Is Us.

It will be a brand-new take on the general concept of a young ensemble show built around a storytelling device of a person - in this case a mother - telling the story of how they met their spouse.

"She is completely original, hilariously amusing and a big, big talent", he said.

How I Met Your Father is being written on spec at the studio, with no network attached, though CBS brass had stated publicly that they would be interested. The CBS sitcom's original creators, Carter Bays and Craig Thomas are attached to executive produce the spin-off, though their involvement will be limited. I hear it incorporates some of Bennett's personal experiences. It's part of Bennett's overall deal that she signed in April.
