Lacazette quick off the mark to extend opening day record

Shinji Okazaki scored a fifth minute equaliser, Jamie Vardy put Leicester ahead and Danny Welbeck levelled for Arsenal before halftime.

Many observers may have thought Giroud's days at Arsenal were numbered following the arrival of fellow France striker Lacazette from Lyon for a club-record £46.5m fee. In the end he made a decision to stay and it was one of the great days of the recent weeks for me.

After enduring a troubled campaign marred by fan protests against him last season, Wenger desperately needs a strong start this term.

'I prefer to be on the pitch, ' the 30-year-old admitted in his post-match interview with Sky Sports.

'Tonight we needed this win, everyone knows the importance of the first game for confidence.

He said, "I prefer to be on the pitch as much as I can but I want to help the team reach the targets".

Asked if Giroud could still leave before the transfer window closes on August 31 until January, Wenger replied: "No".

Giroud was on the pitch for nearly half an hour against Leicester with the 26-year-old Lacazette, who joined from Lyon. "He did very well on the left when we moved him".

To think, we have an entire opening weekend to go yet, as well as an entire season.

Giroud then sent the previously despondent Arsenal fans wild when he headed the 85th minute victor from a corner, Leicester keeper Kasper Schmeichel only managing to turn the ball onto the underside of the bar before it bounced over the line. The defense will need to become firmer if far sterner opponents than Leicester are to be beaten.

But the thing with Chelsea is that they play to the system, are well drilled and the new signings will fit into that system which has shown works so well over the past 12-months.

"We had some avoidable goals which we conceded and overall we have to work on that", he said referring to poor marking in the by his team's defence.

"We were quite good past year on corners and overall I believe that with a bit of work we can get that out of the system".
