The Yankees placed Masahiro Tanaka on the 10-day disabled list for right shoulder inflammation, the team announced on Saturday.

Righty Giovanny Gallegos was recalled from Class AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre as the corresponding move. Team doctors determined there is "nothing structural.but we decided he needs a break".

"I don't think this will be too long", manager Joe Girardi said.

Girardi said there is nothing structurally wrong with Tanaka.

Having gone just four innings while issuing five free passes in his last start, it's clear that this issue has come up just recently for Tanaka. Rather, Tanaka was feeling more worn out.

The former Japanese ace is 8-10 with a career-high 4.92 ERA in 23 starts during an up-and-down season.

Tanaka won't throw for five days while doing strengthening exercises.

Girardi said the right-handers Luis Cessa and Bryan Mitchell were the leading candidates to start Monday's game against the Mets, which Tanaka had been scheduled to pitch.

NY does have depth in their rotation after adding Sonny Gray and Jamie Garcia at the trade deadline, but had sent Montgomery to the minors in an effort to limit his innings.
