Suzuki Motor has unveiled a new hybrid variant of its popular Swift hatchback in its home country - Japan. The Swift hybrid will be offered in Japan in two versions - SG and SL. Powering the Swift Hybrid is a 1.2-litre petrol engine that churns out 89 bhp and is mated to a 10 kW electric motor generator sending power only to the front wheels. In addition to driving assist with its motor function, the system automatically stops the engine and switches to EV driving when the vehicle is running at a constant speed or during creeping.

Suzuki has topped up the vehicle with two driving modes for brisk driving, and driving with priority on fuel efficiency by increasing the frequency of EV driving. Suzuki has managed to weigh the Swift Hybrid just under 1000 kg, which results in the hatchback qualifying for several tax benefits in Japan. The new variant is not only more environmentally conscious, but also more fuel efficient and the automaker claims a mileage of 32 kmpl in the Japanese cycle. These include Dual Sensor Brake Support collision mitigation system - it features a monocular camera and laser sensor to detect pedestrians and vehicles ahead, and additional airbags.

While the new generation Suzuki Swift is an extremely important product for India and is set to hit the floors at the 2018 Auto Expo, but there are no indication of hybrid Swift will come to India, due to high pricing and expensive technology.

On the outside, there are no changes to the Swift except for the "Hybrid" badge on the front fender.
