In a city that never sleeps, the Metlife Stadium came alive with the IIFA Awards celebration here on Saturday night, with Shahid Kapoor and Alia Bhatt becoming proud winners of the Best Actor trophies for their remarkable work in Udta Punjab. Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury got the award for Best Director for his film Pink.

This year's best actress award was given to Alia Bhatt for Udta Punjab.

Her co-star, Shahid, was honoured with the best actor gong for his portrayal of drug-addict rockstar, Tommy Singh. "Shahid captioned the picture as, "#Udtapunjab double whammy.

"Neerja" turned out to be thebig victor when it took home the coveted award for Best Picture.

Veterans Shabana Azmi and Anupam Kher won best supporting actors, for "Neerja" and the Dhoni biopic respectively. Actor Jim Sarbh won the Best Performance in a Negative role for his act in the movie.

Other nominees in the field included Karan Johar for "Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, ' Neeraj Pandey for 'M.S. Dhoni, ' Ram Madhvani for 'Neerja, ' Ali Abbas Zafar for 'Sultan" and Abhishek Chaubey for 'Udta Punjab'. Tulsi Kumar and Kanika Kapoor shared the Best Playback Singer (Female) honour for Airlift and Udta Punjab respectively.

Given that it came for a film which was mired in controversy with the censor board over its theme and content, made the success sweeter for the stars - even Diljit Dosanjh walked away with the Best Debutante - Male Actor for his performance in the film.

The best story award went to Ayesha Devitre Dhillon and Shakun Batra for Kapoor & Sons.
