Everton confirm signing of former Southampton defender Cuco Martina on a free transfer

Everton have signed defender Cuco Martina on a three-year deal.

And the Curacao global made no secret of his delight at finally signing for the Toffees.

"We will play against Twente, one of my old clubs too, and I'm really looking forward to showing everyone what I can do".

"Obviously, I know the manager from my time at Southampton, so I know what he wants and he knows what I can do", he added.

Martina's versatility attracted Koeman to the Curacao global, who made nine Premier League appearances for Southampton last season, as Everton attempt to balance European commitments with their efforts to break into the Premier League's top six.

"Everton supporters are really passionate about their Club and everyone's excited about where the Club is aiming".

Martina recently became captain of his national team.

Barkley has rejected the club's offer of a new contract and seems unlikely to sign a deal while Everton manager Koeman is targeting more players for the same position with Swansea's Gylfi Sigurdsson still on his wanted list. You can see this is a club that wants to achieve something and the players we are bringing certainly show this.

Netherlands-born Martina, who captains Curacao at worldwide level, becomes the Toffees' seventh summer signing, joining Wayne Rooney, Sandro Ramirez, Henry Onyekuru, Davy Klaassen, Jordan Pickford and Michael Keane at the Premier League club. It's also important, with the number of games we will face in the coming campaign, that we have strength and competition in the squad. The 23-year-old has been linked with Tottenham Hotspur and several Premier League clubs having entered the final 12 months of his contract, although Everton insist his absence is because of a groin injury that has required treatment and forced him to miss last week's visit to Tanzania.

"I brought the player to Southampton, so I know what he can do for us here and this is why I've now brought him to Everton".
