None has been bigger than this.

"After much thought and a long evaluation of our football operations, I have chose to relieve Dave Gettleman of his duties as general manager", Panthers owner Jerry Richardson said.

"After much thought and a long evaluation of our football operations, I have made a decision to relieve Dave Gettleman of his duties as General Manager", owner Jerry Richardson said in a statement.

During an appearance on the Know Them from Adam podcast last week, Williams said the Panthers were one of four teams he wouldn't play for next season, along with the Cleveland Browns, Jacksonville Jaguars and Dallas Cowboys. "While the timing of this decision is not ideal, a change is needed". In 2015 the team won an National Football Conference Championship.

Gettleman took over the general manager position in 2013. The move comes as a surprise despite the team's 6-10 finish in 2016, primarily because of the timing.

The move came as a surprise to much of the National Football League world, who didn't see the firing coming, especially this close to training camp, which opens July 26, according to their website.

Now another GM has bitten the dust, as the Carolina Panthers announced the release of Dave Gettleman on Monday morning.

The 66-year-old Gettleman also spent time in the Broncos and New York Giants' scouting departments and was promoted to pro personnel director with the club in 1999.
