On their first official visit to Poland they have come with their children, Prince George, who will be 4 on Saturday, and Princess Charlotte, 2.

But all eyes will be on the couple's children, George aged three and two-year-old Charlotte, who are getting used to travelling overseas having joined their parents in Canada past year for an official trip.

The Warsaw visit is part of a five-day tour of Poland and Germany, and is part of a campaign by the British government to include members of the royal family as unofficial ambassadors during recently launched negotiations on Britain's exit from the EU. The visit is at the request of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, and will be Prince William and Kate's first official joint visit to Poland and Germany.

A Kensington Palace spokesman has said: "The Duke and Duchess are very much looking forward to this tour and are delighted with the exciting and varied programme that has been put together for it".

William and Kate are scheduled to spend two days in Poland touring the country's historical sites, including the Stutthof Concentration Camp, where more than 65,000 people perished during World War II, and the shipyards in Gdansk, the birthplace of Poland's Solidarity movement.

The pre-Brexit trip, taken at the request of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, has been seen as a chance to improve relations with European Union nations as negotiations get underway.

Chancellor Angela Merkel will hold a private meeting with the royal couple in Berlin at the start of the German leg of their tour on Wednesday.

It's this mission the royals have pursued in recent months in various European cities.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will also visit Berlin's Holocaust museum and memorial.

Perhaps the penultimate event of the royal tour will be when William and Kate take their competitive streak to the water as they captain crew boats in Heidelberg.
