The San Diego Padres are not happy with Anthony Rizzo

The defending champions will get their first chance when they host the San Diego Padres in the opener of a three-game series Monday night at Wrigley Field.

Pirates 8, Brewers 1: Andrew McCutchen hit a two-run homer, Gerrit Cole pitched seven strong innings and Pittsburgh beat Milwaukee.

The Cubs are returning home after winning their first road series since the end of April.

Willson Contreras drove in three runs with a pair of doubles, and John Jay had three hits with an RBI and scored twice.

Rizzo opened the game with a double and scored in the first inning.

Anthony Rizzo hardly looks like a typical leadoff hitter.

"It's not your prototypical lead off the game", said Rizzo.

"For a hard play, no", he said.

Braves 9, Giants 0: R.A. Dickey threw seven scoreless innings, Matt Adams hit another homer and Atlanta sent San Francisco to its seventh straight loss. "We just wanted to calm it down so he can get back out there.".

In the bottom of the first, Rizzo spoiled the Padres' infield shift toward first base by placing a flawless bunt down the third-base line that wasn't picked up until he had reached first. During the streak, Rizzo is batting.409 (18-for-45) during the streak, which equals a career high.

Chicago Cubs outfielder Jason Heyward is sitting out Monday's game against the Padres with a laceration to his left hand.

Since MLB created new rules a few years ago to protect catchers and limit unnecessary hard contact in plays at the plate, we've seen fewer and fewer collisions.

Hedges got the ball early and moved to apply the tag. "We always knew the power was going to come again, and it's coming now".

Although Padres lost 2-1 to the Brewers on Sunday, Padres manager Andy Green has found the ideal combinations for their starts for the future. I don't have any idea how anyone watching that replay could honestly say Rizzo deviated from his path.

Lester is in a select group with Bartolo Colon, CC Sabathia, John Lackey, Justin Verlander, Zack Greinke, Felix Hernandez and Jered Weaver.

Green said Hedges was sore, and wasn't sure how long he would be out after the collision. He's liking this a lot, and obviously he's doing a really good job with it. "That's the way the game has been played for a long, long time and I love seeing it".

Lester is 2-1 with a 2.96 ERA in four career starts against the Padres. Mike Montgomery will start game two and is 0-3 with a 2.56 ERA and 35 strikeouts this season.

Richard, who makes his 10th start of the season, spent portions of the 2015 and 2016 seasons with the Cubs, going 4-3 with three saves in 48 appearances, mostly in relief.

Rizzo then led off the sixth with a triple.

Richard has won three of his last five starts, including an 8 2/3-inning effort in a 6-2 victory over the Cincinnati Reds on Tuesday. Clayton Richard gave up a pair of runs on five hits while walking and striking out three over 6.1 innings of work, not factoring in the decision.
