With few exceptions, every independent counsel or special counsel since the Reagan era has been a Republican, whether the investigation involved a Democratic or Republican administration.

It's quite a barrage: Gingrich is completely dismissing as political the special counsel that was set up to be a nonpartisan effort with the Federal Bureau of Investigation director appointed by former President George W. Bush as its head.

"Mueller is setting up a dragnet of obstruction, financial questions and every aspect of Trump's life and his associates lives.very unsafe", Gingrich continued.

Mueller, for the record, seems more like a stereotypical G-Man, above-board and committed to the truth, than a deep stater. Moreover, Gingrich puts Mueller at the forefront of it.

Gingrich once praised Special Counsel Robert Mueller on May 17 as a "superb choice" and praised his reputation as "impeccable for honesty and integrity". "Mueller is now clearly the tip of the deep state spear aimed at destroying or at a minimum undermining and crippling the Trump presidency", Gingrich tweeted Thursday.

How can Gingrich explain this monumental hypocrisy?

Granted, Starr was investigating a Democrat, Bill Clinton.

On "Outnumbered", the former Speaker of the House said that the violent feelings of people who disagree with conservatives have been building since election night.

During an interview on CNN's "State of the Union", Jay Sekulow, a member of Trump's legal team, insisted the president "is not under investigation", despite the Washington Post's anonymously sourced allegations and Trump's Friday tweet in which he said, "I am being investigated for firing the FBI Director by the man who told me to fire the FBI Director!"

That was 19 years ago, to be sure. Black's Law Dictionary defines a corruption as "t$3 he act of an official or fiduciary person who unlawfully and wrongfully uses his station or character to procure some benefit for himself or for another person, contrary to duty and the rights of others".

It is not just in the matter of the special counsel that Gingrich has let his opinion be heard.

Referring to his own wife, Callista, Gingrich added, "That's when Callista and I learned that a Trump candidacy was likely-and a Trump presidency was possible".

"No", Gingrich said. "I think this whole game of recusal now is - this is a nightmare".

"I think it's wonderful, if you look at the - for example, CNN's 93 percent negative coverage according to Harvard, 93 percent negative, I think it's a miracle that Trump has any approval", the former speaker said.

"The FBI leak of information regarding the president is outrageous, inexcusable and illegal", Trump's attorney said about the reports in a statement.
