Celtics, 76ers complete trade for No. 1 draft pick

If the Celtics felt Fultz isn't the draft's surefire best player, acquiring another pick with the player they crave would be smart and give them a bit more cap room, with a No. 3 pick being cheaper to sign than a No. 1.

Celtics fans have been leery about moving back, particularly with all the buzz about likely No. 1 pick Markelle Fultz. Considering Boston only received one additional draft pick to the swap, it is safe to assume that Ainge did not think Fultz would live up to his hype.

"We're taking the next step in formulating a solid young core of players that will ultimately lead to a successful and sustainable product", Colangelo said.

The trade has been in place in principle since Saturday, but reports suggested that the Celtics might also receive a 2021 first-round pick in the deal, so perhaps that was the main point of negotiations. "I think that we have several in the top five or six that could've fit a certain way and helped us along".

According to the team, the future first round pick will be the Los Angeles Lakers' 2018 pick if it is within the number 2 to 5 range in the 2018 draft.

Lonzo Ball could also become a Celtic if the Lakers decide to take Jackson second overall. I'm a pretty good shot blocker for a point guard, so I think helping them with that, everything would pretty much help with that.

"The odds are in your favor at No. 1 more so than in any other (draft) position", Colangelo said during a news conference Monday afternoon.

Jimmy Butler has been the guy most people around the league believe the Celtics are interested in going after.

The Celtics now have rights to seven first round #Draft Picks over the next three years. It's rare that we see the No. 1 overall pick traded which has happened in a deal between the Boston Celtics and Philadelphia 76ers. "We feel like it's a jump-start for us. I'm happy the players want me to come here", said Fultz, who had heard similar sentiments from the Celtics, particularly fellow former Washington Huskies star Isaiah Thomas. Josh Jackson from Kansas and Jayson Tatum from Duke are the current front-runners to be taken third overall. That's when the Orlando Magic traded the No. 1 pick to the Golden State Warriors for the No. 3 pick and three future first-rounders. He arrived at the training complex wearing his own Sixers hat, planned to get a cheesesteak after his workout, and took a photo with Simmons, Joel Embiid and Robert Covington. He averaged 23.2 points, 5.7 rebounds and 5.9 assists per game while shooting 47.6 percent from the field and 41.3 percent from the arc. "I would venture to say we're going to be sold out this year playing to full capacity every night".
