In a tweet, Mr Modi said, he is sad to learn about the tragic incident.

Portuguese media reported several people were killed in their cars while attempting to escape the flames.

Many of those killed died while trapped in their cars as huge flames swept over a road amid intense fires Prime Minister Antonio Costa described as the "the biggest tragedy" the country has experienced in years.

Gomes says 54 people were also injured in the fire, five of them seriously, including four firefighters and a minor. Reporting for euronews, Filipa Soares said that no doubt the road on which many people lost their loves, their cars engulfed in the flames, will from now on be referred to as the "road of death".

More than 350 soldiers had joined 700 firefighters fighting the fire.

A massive forest fire in central Portugal has spread to the streets, causing major fatalities in its wake. At least 18 people died on the N-236, a road linking Figueiro dos Vinhos to Castanheira de Pera, according to Secretary of State for the Interior Jorge Gomes.

Dozens of fire engines drove back and forth to fight the raging blaze in areas as far as 20km north of Pedrogao Grande.

The huge fires had been caused by dry lightning, Almeida Rodrigues, director of the Portuguese criminal investigation police (PJ), told reporters. "I am completely stunned by the number of deaths".

'The fire has reached a level of human tragedy that we have never known before'.

There was no immediate identification of the victims.

Statistics show that 35 percent of Portugal is covered by woodland, slightly above the 28-nation European Union average of 31 percent. France was also sending three aircraft and Greece's prime minister also offered to send firefighting help.

Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy tweeted that he was "overwhelmed by the tragedy at Pedrogao Grande". The forest fires that started off in the center of the country have made more than 50 victims until now, as well as injuring more than 60 others.

Pedro Passos Coelho, a former premier and leader of the opposition Social Democrats, suspended his political agenda. The ceremony took place before the teams' match Sunday at the Confederations Cup tournament.

"I give my deepest sympathy ... to the families and close ones of the victims", he added.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino, attending the match in Russian Federation, showed his support to those affected by the fire.
