Beloved Actor Adam West, TV's Original Batman, Has Died Aged 88

His publicist, Molly Schoneveld, said Saturday that West died after a "short but courageous battle against leukemia".

Adam West's "Batman" costar Burt Ward has joined some of Hollywood's biggest stars in paying tribute to the legend, who died Friday night at the age of 88. "He was a beloved father, husband, grandfather, and great-grandfather".

Greg Berlanti, producer of comic book adaptations of "Supergirl", "Arrow", "The Flash" and "Riverdale", thanked West for being a "hero". As an older actor, he played "Timothy North" on the hit TV show Kim Possible. He reprised his role as Batman many times, from SuperFriends: The Legendary Super Powers Show (1984) to The Simpsons (2002).

The television series "Batman" debuted on United States television in 1966 and became a surprise hit, lasting three seasons.

West started his acting career doing mostly Westerns, appearing in most of the major genre shows at the time from Bonanza to Gunsmoke.

"This is a terribly unexpected loss of my lifelong friend, I will forever miss him", the statement continued. "I will forever miss him".

The cause was leukemia, his family said in a statement.

The actor is survived by his wife, Marcelle, six children, five grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. West and his co-star Burt Ward, who played Batman's sidekick Robin, won widespread acclaim for their kitsch portrayal of the Dynamic Duo.

Adam West was best known of course for his role on Batman in the 1960's, but there is one voice-over role especially that he's carried on in recent years: Mayor Adam West on Fox's Family Guy. There are several fine actors who have portrayed Batman in films.

A generation that grew up with West's Batman embraced him in his later years, and West became a voiceover actor on such animated shows as Family Guy, where his self-deprecating wit served him well as the voice of Quahog mayor Adam West.

West's Batman was known for his insane one-liners and tight costume, but it was West's straight-faced portrayal that made the role truly legendary. West also voiced the Caped Crusader and other characters in numerous animated incarnations of Batman.
