"There are humanitarian consequences to this blockade", Tillerson urged. We're seeing shortages of food.

Qatar has maintained its diplomatic clout in part by being the home of U.S. Central Command and the U.S's largest air base in the region and hosting branches of prestigious Western universities. Qatar says the charges are baseless. "No more funding", the president said.

"The blockade is hindering United States military actions in the region and the campaign against ISIS", Tillerson said, without providing details. They warned, however, that their ability to make longer-term plans was being affected. "Qatar remains critical for coalition air operations in the fight against ISIS and around the region".

Tensions surged between countries closer to Saudi Arabia (such as Bahrain, and Egypt) and others, such Qatar, with ties to Iran.

The extraordinary denunciation of the key US ally seemed to align the White House with the diplomatic blockage on Qatar that kicked off earlier this week by Saudi Arabia, Egypt, United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Libya, Yemen and the Maldives. Qatar's neighbors have also criticized Qatar for allegedly supporting groups like the Muslim Brotherhood and Hamas.

Qatar denies the allegations and has sent its top diplomat on a tour of European capitals in a bid to drum up support. The hack, which USA officials reportedly believe was carried out by Russian Federation, includes the posting of a fake news story.

He also thanked Saudi Arabia and King Salman for participating in the summit.

Asian football officials are monitoring the diplomatic crisis between Qatar and other Arab states, hoping to minimise the impact on worldwide competitions being played in the Gulf region.

Sheikh Mohammed said Qatar was committed to solving the issue via a dialogue and that he considered the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf as the most appropriate format for such talks. "The time had come to call on Qatar to end its funding".

"The leaders agreed the decision came after Qatar insisted on taking a path that is harmful to Arab states and after attempts to prevent it from supporting terrorist groups", the statement said. "But he must do more and he must do it more quickly".

Tillerson, who dealt with Qatari leaders for years as chief executive officer of Exxon Mobil Corp., is skilled at bringing people together and is ready to help if needed, State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said Thursday.
